Italian newspaper launches experiment with AI content

Mar 19, 2025

Rome [Italy], March 19: The Italian daily newspaper Il Foglio published its first-ever edition with content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) on Tuesday, an experiment set to run for one month.
Unlike the traditional 10-page version, the AI-produced edition, named Il Foglio AI, is a slimmer four pages. A version is also available online.
The debut issue was distributed for free alongside its conventional edition, which sells for €1.80 ($1.96) at news-stands.
The plan is for AI programmes to generate headlines, craft summaries and select key quotes. "We journalists will just ask the questions," the paper said, adding that journalists will review all the answers.
The aim is to "transform artificial intelligence from a gaseous state - representing theory - into a solid state, where it becomes practical and usable." At the end of this experiment, the editorial team plans to share what impact the Il Foglio AI experiment had on their way of working.
Founded only in 1996, the paper is one of Italy's smaller national daily newspapers.
According to the paper, Il Foglio is the first printed newspaper in the world to be created using only AI.
Various portals on the internet are already experimenting with pages created entirely by AI.
