Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], April 6: Malaysia is making progress in combating plastic pollution as it formulates a national policy on plastic production, use and waste, an official said on Friday.
The policy includes negotiations and consultations with various stakeholders to ensure results in compliance with the Global Plastics Treaty (GPT) which is currently being negotiated, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said in a statement.
"The GPT, once in force, will lead to a decrease in unnecessary plastic consumption via a just transition. Malaysia has so far taken part in four rounds of international negotiations on the GPT at the inter-governmental negotiating committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution including in the marine environment," he said.
The negotiations for a global plastics treaty stem from the adoption of a landmark resolution at the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly held in Nairobi, Kenya in February 2022.
